Company history
It all began with the sale of cows on a ranch in Kenya. At the time, however, founder Alessandro Medici never imagined that this would lay the foundation for what would later become Power-Blox AG in Switzerland. Although he had no idea about cow trading, he quickly took a liking to the lively and humorous manner of the Kenyan cow traders. After, contrary to expectations, more than 350 cows were sold and the money earned was invested in a solar plant, the first chapter of the Powerblox story was written.
The electrical engineer's first project in Africa was such a success that he subsequently founded a solar company in Tanzania. Many projects followed, many plants were built, but they were often complex and constantly created new dependencies on the engineer, who was back in Switzerland in the meantime. A simple, modular, flexible and arbitrarily scalable battery system was needed. This was the vision of the Powerblox founder.
But to realize this, he first had to reinvent the power grid. Here, nature helped him further with its concept of the "swarm". Batteries of any design are interconnected to form an "energy swarm" and organize themselves independently. They behave like birds in a flock, which can be larger or smaller, divided or united. Depending on how the situation requires it.
The concept was so advanced that Medici even won the Axpo Energy Award with it in 2014, together with his co-founder Armand Martin. There was just one catch: they had neither a product nor any idea how to implement the revolutionary concept. Even worse, a bachelor's thesis at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich concluded that the concept was nice, but completely unrealizable. Fortunately, at the time of this bad news, the founding duo had already completed a prototype and secured funding to develop a marketable product.
However, it still took over three years and caused a lot of smoke until a marketable product was available. The young Powerblox remained true to its motto: Plug together, switch on, power. And the revolutionary product design in Swiss bright red, soon attracted a lot of attention and fans. It became apparent that the use of Powerblox devices holds incredible opportunities, especially in development cooperation, disaster relief and in war zones such as Ukraine. But Swisscom also liked the concept, needing electricity in hundreds of alpine huts to power its telephone systems. And recently, even the United Nations jumped on this innovative bandwagon and created a category for it. With Powerblox, electricity became child's play. True to our motto: "Strom gits jetzt für alli" (Electricity is now for everyone).
Over 15 years of experience in the solar sector, both in Switzerland and internationally. Prior to that, he worked for over 20 years in the IT environment, supporting large companies on their way to digitalization. Visionary thinking, disruptive concepts and an endless energy to make the impossible possible characterize the founder of Power-Blox AG. In addition, the really big problems of this world are close to his heart, such as the current climate crisis and making sustainable electricity possible for 700 million people without access to electricity.
Experienced strategist with over 30 years of experience in leading transformation projects in emerging markets, especially in Asia, Russia and the Middle East. He has been active in a wide variety of industries and most recently developed the China and Asia Pacific markets for the company Hilti, where he was responsible for approximately 5500 employees. At Powerblox, he brings all his expertise to strategy and marketing development, especially focusing the very broadly applicable technology on dedicated segments as well as investor support.
Msc. Sustainable Development, Diploma in Business Administration (FH): Many years of experience as a marketing and communications manager in the advertising industry and in live marketing. With a short interruption at Power-Blox AG since 2020. Started as a marketing manager, but quickly proved his all-rounder qualities and supported the management with business and financial models in project work and acquisition. Since the end of 2022, responsible for production and accounting as Head of Operations in addition to the previous scope of duties.
Before joining Powerblox, Markus gained over 10 years of experience in international research and development with a focus on nanotechnology, photonics, renewable energy and physics. At Powerblox he leads the development of all hardware and software products, as well as new solution concepts for renewable energy projects. He is a proven expert in engineering and simulation of storage systems in combination with different energy sources.
Currently the youngest member of the Powerblox team, manages external and internal projects of various kinds. As a studied civil engineer, he supports the team mainly in all constructional and building specific aspects of energy solutions and projects. He also leads the evaluation of production partners and international logistics at Powerblox.
